Flooring Calculator

Find how much flooring you need, with waste and box counts.

Enter your room dimensions and the coverage printed on the flooring box to get the area, the area including waste, and how many boxes to buy. A 10% waste allowance is included by default for cuts and offcuts.

How it works

Area is length × width. Multiply by your waste allowance, then divide by the square footage each box covers and round up. Keep a spare box for future repairs — dye lots change between production runs.

Frequently asked questions

How much flooring do I need?
Multiply room length by width for the area, add 10% for waste, then divide by the coverage per box. A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft, or about 8 boxes at 20 sq ft each with waste.
How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?
Plan for 5–10% on straight layouts and up to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Buy a spare box too — dye lots vary between runs.
How many boxes of flooring is that?
Divide the area-with-waste by the square footage each box covers (shown on the label) and round up to whole boxes.
