Gravel Calculator

Estimate gravel, crushed stone, or aggregate by volume and weight.

Enter the area you're covering and the depth of gravel to get the volume in cubic yards and the approximate weight in tons. Gravel is often sold by the ton, so the weight estimate helps you order the right amount.

How it works

Volume is area × depth (in feet), divided by 27 for cubic yards. Weight uses an average of about 1.4 tons per cubic yard for typical crushed gravel — actual weight varies with stone type and moisture. For driveways, a 2–4 inch depth is common.

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need?
Multiply the area by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 2 inches deep needs about 1.23 cubic yards.
How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
About 1.4 tons for typical crushed gravel, though it ranges from roughly 1.2 to 1.7 tons depending on the stone and moisture content.
What depth of gravel should I use?
For a walkway, 2 inches is usually enough. Driveways typically use 4 inches or more, often in layers over a compacted base.
How much gravel do I need for a French drain?
Enough to fill the trench: length × width × depth. A 25-ft drain in a 12-inch-wide, 18-inch-deep trench needs about 1.4 cubic yards of drainage gravel.
